What I’m Reading

I’m a book fanatic. I’m pretty sure you know that by now. In fact, when I was getting ready to graduate from high school, I was crowned “Class Bookworm” by my classmates. A prestigious honor, indeed. I probably would have been more flattered to get the “Most Likely to Succeed” or “Class Hottie” award, but whatever.

So I thought you might be interested in what is currently in the stack of books beside my bed. What I pick up to read at the end of each day is completely dependent on my mood. Nothing more, nothing less. Here’s the current stack:

A Thousand Shall Fall:
This is a fascinating story about a family trying to keep the faith during World War 2. I can only read little bits at a time because it messes with my emotions and my blood pressure starts rising whenever the Nazi’s show up. I hope that doesn’t sound flippant, because I’m being completely serious.

Escaping the Devil’s Bedroom:
This is an eye-opening book about women who have been freed from sexual slavery either in the form of sex trafficking, prostitution or performing in strip clubs, etc. Again, it’s not for the faint of heart and I can only read it in small doses because it’s hard on my emotions!

How and When to Tell Your Kids About Sex:
I’m not sure how to comment on this one other than to say it’s a necessary read for every parent who is committed to teaching their kids about God’s ideas for sex before their classmates educate them for you.

Sacred Rhythms:
A dear friend and fellow pastor’s wife recommended this one. It’s kicking my spiritual butt. In a good way. I need it.

To Kill a Mockingbird:
I love this book. Scout, Jem, Atticus, Dill, Calpurnia, Boo Radley, and Tom Robinson. I don’t know how many times I’ve read this book yet somehow I get something new with each reading. If you’ve never read this one before (and even if you have), you must pick it up! It’s a classic for a reason.

The All New Ultimate Southern Living Cookbook:
Because sometimes I just need to think about food.

That’s it! What’s on your nightstand?

great list of books! i wish i could just come borrow them. :)

i’m reading “The Bookseller of Kabul” by Asne Seierstad and enjoying it. i also am about 1/4 of the way into “Emma”, but as with all Austen books, I just can’t get into it. i feel that makes me a failure in literature, but those books and i just don’t click. my to-read list includes “The Mission of Motherhood” by Sally Clarkson, which i’m looking forward to in the same way i look forward to exercising. :)

The View from Castle Rock by Alice Munroe, The Dim Sum of All things by Kim Wong Keltner, Persuasion by Jane Austen, Can you Hear Me; tuning In To the God Who Speaks by Brad Jersak and Bread for the Journey by Henri Nouwen. I like to read a lot of books at once too and pick up that one that suits my mood. Keep making suggestions!

You seriously need to include a book of comics or something. You read books that are way heavy.

I love seeing what others are reading. On my nightstand: Friendship for Grown-ups by Lisa Whelchel, The Hidden Flame by Davis Bunn/Janette Oke, Bone Worship by Elizabeth Eslami, Southern Lights by Danielle Steel, and Discover your Child’s Learning Style by Mariaemma Willis/Victoria Hodson.
