I love college students. I particularly love college guys. I often find myself feeling great affection toward college guys, as if they were my younger brothers, or my sons. Maybe it’s because I don’t have any sons. Or maybe it’s because they say “dude” every other word. Or maybe it’s because they are such great story tellers and I always end up laughing when they’re around. Or maybe it’s because they appreciate a home cooked meal like no other species on earth.
Friday night we had a cookout. There’s a new college kid in our congregation who has agreed to help us out over the summer with some worship leading. So we decided to host a cookout and introduce him to some of the other college age kids that we’ve gotten to know over the last few years.
We started with steaks on the grill. I marinated them in my mom’s marinade for about 8 hours (I shall nevuh, evuh, evuh divulge the recipe. . .mostly because I fear my sister’s wrath. She’s so weird about family recipes). They were tender and delicious and all around YUM!

We rounded out the meal with baked potatoes, 7-layer salad, and watermelon. The meal was eaten in almost complete silence. I think that’s a sign of really good food.

Then we moved onto dessert: rhubarb crisp, because I can’t think of anything more fabulous on a Friday night in June than rhubarb:

After the meal we headed to the living room for a little Guitar Hero:

Here’s some of my faves (Drew and Caleb are brothers. They are also uncle and nephew. You heard me right. I don’t make this stuff up people. Adam is hands-down the best musician I’ve ever known, and Zach is our new worship leader and he is awesome! And he has a southern drawl that I just love!):

Guitar Hero got a little intense: Here's another reason I love these guys: They're so sweet with my girls! Caleb was so patient while he explained to Bryn how to use the guitar. And the other guys had no problem moving over and giving Ellie (and Conrad!) free reign of the drums: This is Amber. She’s one of only two girls in our college crew (and the only one who was there on Friday). She puts up with these guys because she has no other choice. We love her: I also wanted to mention somewhere in here that Brandon and Carla hung out for awhile but I don’t have any great pictures to prove it, so you’ll just have to take my word for it! A gorgeous June Friday night where I filled up a bunch of appreciative bellies and laughed till I cried. . . I loved every minute of it. Dude.
